The third round table, chaired by science journalist Régis de Closets, focused on careers and the question: “Does passing on knowledge play a key role in people’s decision to pursue a career in science?” Portuguese chemist Katia Teixeira, who received the 2008 Fellowship in France, shared her own experiences. The round table also featured a presentation by Vincent Dartigues, Clientelnet research manager, who looked at current trends among young women and careers in science. Claudine Hermann, honorary professor at the Ecole Polytechnique and honorary president of the Women in Science association, gave a fascinating insight into her meetings with over 3,000 young people. Patricia Pineau was also involved in the third round table, looking at how a career in science begins and factors that can either encourage or discourage people from pursuing a career in the field. Ms Pineau also highlighted the importance of the For Women in Science programme in recognising the work of women researchers and in encouraging young women scientists around the world.Picture: “For Women in Science” Conference at Le Laboratoire in Paris, 4th February 2009.
